Images, Copyright, and You

As teachers, we are good at teaching students about plagiarism when it comes to words or ideas. However, we also need to teach students that pictures are intellectual property and using them without permission is as bad as copying and pasting someone else’s words for an essay or report. We need to train students to not use pictures from Google searches for their work. Students should also be citing where their images have come from. If an image is not marked as one of the following, then copyright automatically applies:

  • Royalty Free
  • Public Domain
  • Creative Commons
  • Fair Use
  • Open Education Resource
  • Or otherwise marked as free to use
